Seborrheic Dermatitis

Seborrheic dermatitis is a common chronic or recurrent skin condition that causes red patches covered with large, greasy, flaking yellow-gray scales, and persistent itch.

Seborrheic dermatitis occurs most often on areas of the body with oil-producing (sebaceous) glands, including the scalp, face (especially on and around the nose, eyebrows, and eyelids), ears, upper chest, and back.

Seborrheic dermatitis may present differently depending on body area and skin tones, making it difficult to diagnose and recognize. In individuals with darker skin tones, affected areas may have no redness, and instead appear pink, slightly purple, or lighter in color than the surrounding skin.

Recognizing Seborrheic Dermatitis and its Impact

Seborrheic dermatitis is an inflammatory skin condition affecting as many as 10 million Americans. Despite how common it is, a lack of awareness and understanding of the condition persists. To gain deeper insight into the impact and experiences of those with seborrheic dermatitis, Arcutis Biotherapeutics commissioned a nationwide survey* of 300 adults living with the disease. The survey found that most people don’t know much about the condition, don’t get help right away, and face additional challenges in their daily lives.

*The Skin Insights: Clearing Up Seb Derm survey was conducted online by The Harris Poll on behalf of Arcutis Biotherapeutics among 300 U.S. adults 18+ who had been diagnosed with seborrheic dermatitis by a healthcare provider. The survey was conducted in 2021/2022. The n sizes reported throughout the document are unweighted sample sizes that reflect the actual number of respondents within the sample described, while all reported percentages are calculated based on the weighted data.
